Great Bristol beer but why so much citrus?

I like to try different breweries and different beer. I have lived in Bavaria where beer is a religion, I have tried micro brewery beer in America and main-stream beer in Spain, Italy and France.
The selection from Bristol is generally very good, but for one major flaw - it seems every brewery these days, Bristol and Cornwall, has a need to include a heavy citrus, lemony taste to the beer. I don't like that and don't understand why many different brewers all seem to follow the same recipe. Is there a god of beer that dictates from on high that we should like our beer flavoured with the fruit of the citrus? What's the problem with hops - that's what flavours beer, I know the Kentish hop fields aren't as prolific as in yesteryear but there are alternatives. I have tasted several IPAs recently which all tasted pretty much of the same lemon tree. I'm sure that the original India Pale Ale tasted like proper beer, otherwise they wouldn't have sold much of it.

My dad was very chuffed with this gift. Great experience from start to finish.

Bristol Beer Box

Nothing wrong with the beers - per se, but Arbor & BBF are fairly ubiquitous in shops / supermarkets in my area, so some other breweries could have been represented (eg. Wiper & True, LHG, GWB, Fierce & Noble, Twisted Oak, Beat Ales & Cocksure). Looking forward to the next selection !
